Community Service

Over the last seven years we have built a strong community relationship with the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, along with other partners in our surrounding school community area.  We began this effort seven years ago by taking part in the Chamber of Commerce meetings and developing a rapport with the following town officials: Ms. Lisa O’Reilly, Village Recreation Assistant, Ms. Ann Russak, Sr. Outreach Coordinator, and Mr. Issac Garson, local business owner.  Students from our district participate in the following annual events.

Annual Events

  • Senior Citizen Community Picnic – This event takes place every October where students serve, sing, and dance with senior citizens from the towns of Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, and Ardsley at the senior citizen’s picnic which takes place at the Andrus Senior Residence.

  • Hastings-on-Hudson Festival of Lights – A number of students from Ainslie Cottage help with the set-up and clean-up at the annual Festival of Lights Community Day.

  • Annual Make a Difference Day Project – On the last Thursday in October high school and middle school students work with the Village of Hastings Recreation Department at two locations. The students work to beautify the homes of senior citizens and on  special outdoor projects designated by the town.

  • Senior Holiday Party –Students work at the James Harmon Community Center to help seniors to an afternoon snack and enjoy time with them.

  • Community Center- The third Thursday of each month, four students volunteer at the senior citizen’s outreach Bingo and Recreation Program.  They serve coffee and help seniors read their Bingo cards.

  • Spring Clean-Up- We are currently working to establish a Spring Clean-Up project with Lisa O’Reilly and the town Hastings-on-Hudson.

  • Beautification Project- In front of the Hastings Station Café the handiwork of students at M.L.K. High School can be seen in the form of planters that they decorated, painted and planted to beautify the local community.

  • Holiday Concert- 4th and 5th grade students, under the direction of music teacher, Ms. Doe, perform holiday songs for the residents at The Andrus Senior Residence.
